CHC welcomed close to three hundred of California’s affordable housing leaders to this year’s Policy Forum & Housing Hall of Fame Awards in Santa Monica on May 11, 2018. Special thanks goes to our Title Sponsor, AMCAL Multi-Housing, Inc.
Our 2018 program featured an interactive federal policy discussion, an insightful look into the Terner Center on Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley’s LIHTC Resident Survey findings, a 2017/2018 California legislative update by two housing champions from the California Assembly and a thoughtful keynote speech from United States Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho.
The day started with a federal policy update from by David Gasson from Boston Capital. David spoke of tax reform, the Omnibus and a Congress in flux, covering what has happened recently and what lies ahead for federal affordable housing policy.
We then invited Carolina Reid from the Terner Center on Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley to present the findings from their LIHTC Resident Survey, titled ‘Why Affordable Housing Works For Those We Serve.’ She shared how LIHTC promotes housing stability, economic mobility and improved educational outcomes for children. Carolina’s powerpoint presentation can be downloaded here.
We were thrilled to welcome United States Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho as our keynote speaker. Senator Crapo serves as the Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over efforts to ensure the stability of the financial system and promote responsible lending to families and businesses. This includes oversight of federal policy concerning public and private housing, insurance, financial institutions, securities markets, equity investment, urban development, mass transit, foreign trade promotion and economic policy.
Senator Crapo’s speech touched on the general prospects for mitigating the impacts of tax reform to affordable housing, potential prospects for longer term help beyond the omnibus bump, his insights on his Chairmanship and thoughts about the future on the Finance Committee plus his perspective on the rest of the legislative session.
CHC Chair Doug Shoemaker moderated a panel with Assemblymember Richard Bloomand Assemblymember David Chiu about the 2017 legislative successes, their 2018 work on new ideas and implementation of last year’s housing package plus insight into the upcoming 2018 election and housing bond on the ballot this November.
It was a privilege to honor this year’s distinguished group of inductees into the California Housing Hall of Fame. This year we were pleased to recognize the following affordable housing industry supporters:
Public Sector – U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, Assemblymember Richard Bloom, Assemblymember David Chiu
Non-Profit Sector – Cesar Covarrubias, The Kennedy Commission
For-Profit Sector – Michael Costa, Highridge Costa Companies
Lifetime Achievement – Mary Murtagh, EAH Housing
As always, the success of our event would not be possible without our amazing group of sponsors. We sincerely appreciate your support and look forward to having you all back in 2019!
