SACRAMENTO – The California Housing Consortium released the following statement today from Executive Director Ray Pearl, as Governor Newsom unveiled his January budget proposal, which includes significant new and ongoing funding to support affordable housing.
Key housing proposals in the Governor’s January budget include:
Statement from CHC’s Ray Pearl:
“This year has shown once again how essential affordable housing is for California’s most vulnerable groups, and we appreciate Governor Newsom’s ongoing commitment to building more of the affordable housing every community needs.”
“More than one million Californians live in housing built by the state’s successful affordable housing programs. Even in the midst of a pandemic, with all of the fiscal uncertainty that goes with it, the January budget recognizes the importance of this critical resource. In addition to supporting struggling renters and providing more resources to help get people who are homeless off the streets, the budget includes substantial, ongoing investments in the programs that keep our state’s lowest-income families housed.”
“We are particularly pleased to see the Governor’s budget includes vital, ongoing support for the state’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program. California continues to face a shortfall of at least 1.2 million homes for its lowest-income households, and this program remains one of the state’s most successful tools for building and preserving much-needed affordable housing.”
“As Californians continue to shelter in place during through this difficult COVID-19 winter, it is clear that there is nothing more important than a safe, affordable home. We look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature in the months ahead to ensure this hard-earned lesson continues to be reflected in the final budget.”
