Sacramento, CA – The California Housing Consortium (CHC) released the following statement from Doug Shoemaker, Chair of CHC’s Board of Directors and President of Mercy Housing California, after polls closed Tuesday night and the passage of Prop 1 was announced:

“The affordable housing community celebrates this remarkable moment of voters coming together to pass Prop 1 and prioritizing investment in affordable housing for veterans, families and children, seniors, people experiencing homelessness and many more Californians who need a stable place to live.

“Like many of my CHC colleagues, I’ve had the privilege of being with our formerly homeless residents when they open the door to their new homes for the first time – their joy is overwhelming. Today, is the start of opening up many more doors for Californians and building stronger communities.

“We would not be here today without the incredible support of our elected leaders, including Pro Tem Toni Atkins, Sen. Jim Beall and Asm. David Chiu, and our coalition members who have made it their life’s work to build safe, affordable homes and end homelessness in California.”
