State Senate approves California Housing Consortium-sponsored bill—AB 1763 (Chiu)—the only remaining legislation this year that will reduce barriers to affordable housing near transit

As high housing costs push thousands of Californians out of job centers, legislation allows more affordable housing development close to transit

SACRAMENTO – The California Housing Consortium released the following statement from Marina Wiant, Vice President of Government Affairs, following the State Senate’s approval today of AB 1763:

“The California Housing Consortium worked closely with Assemblymember David Chiu on AB 1763, and we want to thank the members of the Senate for voting in support of this important legislation today.”

“This bill is the only legislation remaining this year that will reduce obstacles to building affordable housing developments near transit—a key strategy for addressing California’s affordable housing crisis, while also meeting our state’s environment goals.”

“The bill was carefully crafted to apply only to 100% affordable developments—projects where every single unit represents an opportunity to house a family that can’t afford to pay for rising rents. This legislation will help more much-needed affordable housing projects pencil out, at lower cost—and it is an important step toward closing the state’s current shortfall of 1.4 million affordable rental homes.”

“With the Senate vote today, this bill will now move back to the Assembly for concurrence. The Assembly voted 72-0 to advance the bill in May, and we hope this legislation will be acted on quickly and sent to the Governor for his signature. With his approval, these new rules will go into effect on January 1 of next year—jumpstarting more of the affordable housing development California desperately needs.”
