California Housing Consortium Statement on Election of Xavier Becerra as California’s next Governor
Ray Pearl, Executive Director, California Housing Consortium:
“On behalf of the California Housing Consortium and our statewide coalition of affordable housing developers and community leaders, I want to extend my congratulations to Xavier Becerra on his election as California’s next governor.
“We were honored to stand with the Governor-elect this year during our campaign for Proposition 1, and we are looking forward to building on this partnership to produce and preserve more of the affordable homes Californians need in the years ahead.
“Governor-elect Becerra will take over leadership of the state at a pivotal time for affordable housing—with communities still facing a housing affordability crisis that continues to impact the lives of millions of workers and families, friends and neighbors. Californians made their voices heard in this election, and they have made it clear that when it comes to housing, they want to see action.
“State leaders have made undeniable progress over the last decade in making affordable housing a top policy priority, but there is still much more to do to ensure every Californian has access to a safe, affordable home.
“The Governor-elect has laid out a comprehensive plan to quickly move almost 40,000 shovel-ready affordable housing projects across the state into construction, while cutting building costs, protecting projects from frivolous lawsuits, and ensuring the state’s newly reorganized housing agency can simplify housing financing, improve accountability, and accelerate production.
“We share these same priorities for the year ahead, and we look forward to working closely with the Becerra Administration to build and preserve more of the affordable housing Californians need.”
