California Voters Pass Prop 1

California Voters Pass Prop 1 to Build Safe, Affordable homes
for Veterans, Seniors, and Working Families

SACRAMENTO, CA – In a resounding show of support for affordable housing, California voters approved Proposition 1, the Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026, last night with nearly 60% of the vote, delivering $11.25 billion to build and preserve homes for the Californians who need them most.

Proposition 1 invests $11.25 billion to build affordable homes for veterans, working families, essential workers like firefighters, teachers, and nurses, first-time homebuyers, low-income seniors, and survivors of domestic violence – without raising taxes. It dedicates $1.25 billion solely to veterans’ housing and homeownership, and every dollar comes with independent audits and public reporting.

“Last night, California voters chose to build, making life more affordable for veterans, seniors, working families, and the nurses, teachers, and firefighters our communities depend on. With nearly 60% of the vote, voters said yes to $11.25 billion for affordable homes with strict accountability and no new taxes,” said Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland). “This victory belongs to the coalition of advocates, builders, labor, veterans, and local leaders who never stopped pushing, and above all to the Californians who will have a safe, stable place to call home because of it. We said building affordable homes couldn’t afford to wait, and tonight California agreed.”

“For veterans who have earned a place to call home, for teachers and firefighters who can no longer afford to live in the communities they serve, for seniors on a fixed income who need stability, tonight’s vote puts an affordable home within reach,” said Ray Pearl, a Navy veteran and Executive Director of the California Housing Consortium. “California voters saw the need for this critical funding and overwhelmingly voted YES to make it happen. Prop 1 is a key step in ensuring that every Californian has a safe, affordable place to call home.”

“California voters know the housing crisis is hurting the very people who built this state – from the veterans who served our country to seniors on fixed incomes to essential workers like firefighters, teachers, and nurses. Tonight, Californians voted to do something about it,” said Chione Flegal, Executive Director of Housing California. “Prop 1 invests $11.25 billion to build safe, affordable homes with strict accountability and no new taxes. More than 40,000 affordable homes across California are ready to break ground, stalled only for lack of funding. Prop 1 gets those units built, helps first-time homebuyers, and preserves existing affordable homes so families who have a roof over their heads can afford to keep it.”
